Interesting find there man.
Here Tom Harwood's sig is "Neo Compiler/Runtime Development"
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg89628.html

He also hypothetically mentions "a tool that generates compiler back ends", so that
seems to jive with his line of work. I don't know a lot about what a
compiler back end is, but I gather it is what kind of target
platforms (virtual machines?) a compiler generates executable code
for. I'm probably way off though :) His example is supposedly
hypothetical, but Macromedia is obviously open sourcing code, and
likely the code has to do with compilers, because that is Tom's area
of expertise.

I'm unclear what a tool that generated backends would do though, but I
love to speculate...so perhaps more specifically in CF's case, it is a
tool that generates the different versions of the CF Java runtimes for
the different platforms it runs on? As platform independent Java tries
to be, there are still differences, and I imagine that as they
developed Neo, a way to quickly compile all of different versions for
testing would be quite handy.
I'm not sure what would be gained by open sourcing such a program would
be though...but he said "one of the tools", so what would a suite of
open-source tools that were developed while developing a CF to Java
compiler be good for? Probably many things I don't understand, but the
one thing that I could these tools being used for is development of
alternative platforms and runtimes for the CF language to run on...
