Just because I may be agnostic does not mean I don't know more about the
bible than most. According to surveys that's very common, According to the
Pew Charitable Trust surveys on religion, agnostics and atheists have a
significantly higher knowledge of the bible than most other christian
groups including evangelicals -

As for teaching tolerance, maybe its because those who do not believe stand
to benefit when people practice tolerance. All too often in the past
tolerance was not a virtue that Christianity taught.
