So this kid probably just ran off for some reason or another. Ok. No big
deal. It happens. But his family reported him missing, it ran in all the
national papers, and the public was implored to help in his search.

Now that he's been found...the family is asking for "privacy and to treat
this as a family matter".

And...that's it. No more information.

A similar thing happened here in KC a few years ago. An all points bulletin
was put out for a missing father of a bride to be. He went missing the day
before his daughter's wedding...and the family was on every news channel
telling their sob story about him missing his daughter's wedding and blah
blah. 1000's of police man hours and untold civilian hours (civilians were
out doing massive searches) were wasted, when the guy just showed up one
day....apparently he'd been living out in the woods for several weeks.

Then...that was it. No more information....the family asked for "privacy
and to treat this as a family matter."

I'll admit to being a little pissed off. This guy had some sort of
breakdown or whatever, and tons of people wasted their time and energy on
him...when he was out hiding. I felt like we were owed an explanation.
Don't need all the sordid details....but....we should know the basics of
what happened.

Am I wrong to think that? Does privacy trump all, even when the public is
enlisted to help, and it turns out their help was a waste of time? Aren't
we owed SOME kind of explanation?
