This is a good starting place for a report but one of the problems is that
this is a literature review and Congress has banned study of gun issues by
governmental organizations in the past. That means that folks like the CDC
and NIH couldn't really fund/conduct direct studies so the literature that
is available is a bit scattershot (pun intended).

Overall, it seems to mirror my own conflicted feelings on gun issues. I
like guns but realize that there is definitely a problem in our country. A
great deal of it seems to be cultural. We have falling crime rates but more
fear and a changing gun ownership toward more handguns and high capacity
weapons. I don't really know what the answer to that kind of problem is.

What I'd love to see is some new research that is actually designed to get
at some of these questions in a rigorous fashion. This, at least, seems to
be a start.

Overall, however, I can't help but shake the feeling that the fundamental
problem is a culture of fear and the people that prey on it. I feel like
groups from the NRA to people backing the Patriot Act are pushing a culture
where people are afraid and oppositional and being pressured to give up
rational thought in service of doing "something" to protect themselves,
whether it being gun purchases or gutting the 4th Amendment.

Not sure how we tackle those problems.
