It should also be noted that they only ruled on one part of DOMA, that prevented the federal government from providing equal benefits to same sex couples that are married. The other major part of DOMA allows individual states to not recognize same sex marriages performed in another state. That part of the law was not adjudicated in this particular case. It should get struck down eventually due to the Full Faith and Credit section of the Constitution but at this time it is still up in the air. This means that if you get married in New York and move to Alabama, your marriage may not be recognized in Alabama for legal purposes.
