Keeping the "Under god" reference has two problems: 1: Since it's taught in schools, that means the government is endorsing religion.
2: It implies that our nation is somehow endorsed by god. #1 is unfair to children being raised as atheists, and #2 leads to "holy wars". Honestly, I never had that big a problem with the phrase...I just left it out when reciting the pledge. Although I've gone back and forth with my religious beliefs, I've been pretty consistent about keeping religion and government apart.
