The way that it works in Canada is that Parliament serves at the pleasure of her Majesty as represented by the Governor General. If the government money bill is defeated (think the CR's or budgets) then the GG can dissolve Parliament and there has to be a general election in 6 weeks. There are other circumstances the GG can dissolve Parliament but they're rather arcane.
Think of it, no eternal campaign. Everything is short and too the point. No 2 - 4 year presidential campaign. It gets better and better.
