Perhaps he was being silent to give Israel a chance to work it out.
Or perhaps he didn't want to give the kidnappers any more media
attention than they already had.  That's the whole point of political
kidnappings anyhow, to bring attention to the kidnappers.

I suspect that if he had made a speech about it, or if the First Lady
had mentioned it as she did the Nigerian kidnappings. his opponents
would have accused him of using it for political gain.  I don't like
him much, but it really seems like he can just never win.
