That is a great article, thanks for sharing. I was vaguely aware of that, although when I thought "African ancestry" for those early settlers, I always imagined Moorish influence, northern Africa up on the coast of the Med, which also had a large impact historically on the early Spanish settlers, especially the "workers" who made up the bulk of the settlers.
