Hiya

We have the same sorta (probably IS the same) system here in the UK called
RDS (Radio Data System)

It not only show's the names but can also do some other neat tricks -- "An
RDS radio will automatically select the strongest signal for the national FM
station you select. This means that wherever you drive you will never have
to re-tune your radio. You can also programme RDS to switch local Travel
Announcements on whenever they start and play them louder to alert you. RDS
will work in Europe as well as the UK and if it shows the time and date, the
clock will automatically adjust as you cross time zones."

As for the technicalities of how is slide's the data along side the audio
stream .. well you can google for that yaself. ;P

Subject: Radio question

So, I did end up buying the Town and Country (and I _love_ it), but I
noticed something odd. In new cars, the radio sometimes picks up the
name of the radio station. So instead of seeing 97.3, or whatever, I'll
see THECOAST. What technology does this? I assume it's extra data being
sent along with the radio signal. I don't remember reading about this -
and normally changes like this are kind of a big deal. Anyone have any
information on this format?

-Ray
