The specs are not really that bad. I kind of like the high clock speeds, the 400 Mhz frontside bus, and the impressive amount of RAM.
Of course, I am looking at the $500 model, not the $299 one... The reporter made it sound like getting the thing going was climbing up a mountain. He was also fairly picky about the volume on the fan, which I did not understand. Perhaps he could come up with something REAL to critique? Oh, and the plug for Emachines was fairly overstated.
