I miss seeing those giant monstrosities outside my window as well. Nothing better than looking out over the skyline (from 42nd & 6th) and seeing the Empire State on the left, the Towers on the right. Every morning on my way to work, I look at the spot where they stood and look away because it all is still so fresh in my mind. Used to each lunch in them everyday when I worked downtown. Damn.
Anyhow, the designs I saw weren't what I had in mind either. I was expecting some ultra-modern skyscrapers that rivaled the height of the original buildings -- huge, sleek, modern testaments to 21st century architecture. Maybe Bill's right -- maybe they don't want the buildings too high again. But in my mind, I think we should at least build two twin towers -- maybe four. I remember seeing a design once that had what looked like four miniature trade centers which were about 65 stories each.
