Tim- Nobody is trying to restrict what topics you can discuss, or stick you in a mold.
As a "relative newbie", suggest you look in the archive's at Michael D's requests that when the topic of a thread changes, the subject changes too. He's archiving threads, and going "in any direction" messes that up. So yes, on an off-topic list, you can discuss any topic, but the list owner requested that whatever the topic is, we try to have the subject reflect it.
