It is not that we are lazy (well OK, maybe a little).

It's that with all the Italian and Polish immigrants, and the careless naming of our 
states (Illinois, Mississippi, Indiana, Hawaii), we must remain frugal with our Is.

They don't grow on trees, you know.

With any luck, a few more years of heavy immigration from the Balkans should allow us 
to build up a hefty surplus of all vowels.
