My great uncle has Parkinson's.  It makes you rather twitchy, but doesn't
affect your mental capacity in any way I or the medical community recognize.
Yeah, it screws up your co-ordination something awful, but who cares if her
signature is illegible?

On the other side of the coin, most mental illnesses are quite controllable.
I would have no problem voting for someone with, say, depression.  After
all, the man most responsible for running /my/ life has depression (and has
for several years) and is a remarkably intelligent, charming, and (dare I
say it) stunningly handsome young man. :-)  Seriously, though:  I'd worry a
lot less about depression or bipolarism or something of that nature than I
would about "stupid" -- which is not in the DSM-IV but seems to be an
epidemic.
