You may not have read the article very closely.

"Olson, a 15-year veteran of Seattle's public defender's office, is considered an
effective if eccentric lawyer who wears ruffled petticoats and homemade clothes in
court. Burns had been her sole client for nearly three years. "

She works as a public defender. The cost to the defendant is minimal.
And the fact that this has been her only case for the past three years is, to me, a
little disturbing.

Full time on a single case?
I bet other lawyers wish they could have the same caseload.

And on the public dime.

Shameful.

If you think about it, this is probably not the type of lawyer you would
want.

This guy now has to go and get a new lawyer, pay him or her to get up to
speed on the case, and then still have to go to trial. The process is going
to cost a lot and will probably result in him receiving less effective legal
representation.

The point of having a lawyer is to have an aggressive advocate of one's
rights, and there are less expensive means of securing the same 'services'
without having to throw away a good defense (which it sounds as though he
had with his attorney). This person's attorney really dropped the ball - no
pun intended.
