Subject: Beam me up COBOL

Hi Judith,

While "Enterprise" has brought new life to Star Trek, in a quirky twist of coincidence
the development of many computer languages foretold the next generation of Star Trek
TV series, six in all (we refuse to recognize the short-lived animated version from
the mid '70s).

September 8 marks the 36th anniversary of the first episode of Star Trek. Cue what's
happening in business today. Why lay a good idea to rest?

After Star Trek, Star Trek II, Star Trek Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager,
and now Star Trek Enterprise - business enterprises are also returning to their
"roots" and getting at their old legacy systems data - and some are making the bits
more accessible as Web services.

One company, founded in 1987 - (same year as Star Trek Next Generation) gives new life
to legacy systems. And like Star Trek, is continuously reinventing itself to
essentially address the same conflict, exploring new worlds.

Many businesses are using ClientSoft's legacy systems to explore and re-purpose their
own data, since 70% of business applications are still written in COBOL (Giga),
invented in 1960, even before the first Trekky was a twinkle in Spock's eye.

I'd guess about 70% of people have seen at least one episode of Star Trek... Well, we
can't offer you Scott Bakula, but if you'd like to speak to Hugh Raiford of
ClientSoft, let me know.
