Wow, finally a message that got here only a couple of minutes after it
showed in the archives! The last couple of days have been really goofy as
far as the order I've been getting the emails ...

Do you ever get the feeling that "reverse" racism is getting to be just as
much a problem as racism? That what was originally a search for equality
has been overshadowed by people who are taking the label victim and going
too far with it? That the struggle to be different and the struggle to be
equal just won't work?

I know that I have to work at overcoming prejudices learned when I was
young, but sometimes I just can't help but feel uncomfortable around other
"genetic groups" because they ARE a group. And their actions define them as
a group, with the intent of being different. I won't get into specifics
because I really don't want to come across as sounding prejudiced ... its
just more a feeling of discomfort. Maybe part of it is living in Spokane
(read "very white") and not having daily interaction with these other
"genetic groups".

To society, yes, it does come down to skin color. I'm not saying we
necessarily are how we are peceived, just that that's how we are
labeled.
I disagree with labeling, but it happens. Even within the black
community, it happens. I think it's a divisive thing.

We are as we are perceived? Now I know I'm perceived as extremely
white
when I'm wearing shorts, but I feel black. Er, no, maybe not. ;) Not
sure
I agree though, that we are as we are perceived ... I know too many
people
who are perceived as idiots and they haven't figured that out yet ...
or are
you talking only skin color?

Then again, there's Michael Jackson to screw up the whole thing ...

"According to reports, Gordon also claims to have witnessed Jackson
injecting himself to make his skin lighter. He says he saw the
superstar
inject "some sort of fluid" in 1985."

I have recently been enraptured by studying the Genre de Colour as
well
as the whole concept of "passing". I have come to the conclusion as
far
as black/white goes, you are however you are perceived.

True, Marlon, but for everyone's convenience, you will have to conform

Isn't this what it all boils down to. You are what you think you are.
It's all in how you view yourself or who you want to align with. I
could call myself jewish right now. You could argue that I'm not, but
that wouldn't affect how I view myself.
