Thanks for the all the advice.

  What I eventually did was turn off the furnace (emergency switch) and 
called the oil company.
  They sent someone out.  It seems as if most of the burners had a hole in 
them ( in the same place for just about every one ).
  The guy did some work to plug those holes.  He has no idea why they were 
there.  Everything seems to be working again, except for two things:

  The heater in my bedroom didn't have a strange hole, but he couldn't get 
a valve in the hole, so that doesn't work.
  And the one in my office makes a huge hissing / whistling 
sound.  Something to do with the valve being partially stripped so it would 
go in deeper and he didn't have the facilities to prepare a replacement.

  So, the two rooms I use have problems.  : ha, ha:
