Well,

Many people wanted to include a ban on slavery in the document, but what
came to pass was that it was a states decision. Each state could
determine if there would be slaves in its borders or not.

There was the 3/5 Compromise, which detailed how the census would
reflect slaves.

You are trivializing this, they didn't come up with this overnight.
