I was wondering how quickly people would use the "terrorism" label here. The
word terrorism is a loaded one, but most experts limit the definition to
acts that are politically or socially motivated. The FBI defines it as "the
unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate
or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in
furtherance of political or social objectives."

There is no question that people living in the area were afraid for their
lives. I have family in Alexandria. However, whomever the guilty party is it
is yet to be determined what the motivations are. If they were killing
people for shits and giggles, then it's not terrorism. If they were doing it
to further a stance or make a particular statement, then perhaps it is. The
fact that one of the two suspects have assumed a Muslim name certainly leads
to speculation, however justified or not.
