Hi Candace, Even if you really speeded up your CPU, you might not notice much improvement in the overall performance of your pc.
You need to get data in and out of the CPU and the disk- this depends on the speed of the memory, the PCI bus, the hard disk, the disk controller card, etc. It also can depend on how much RAM you have. If you speed up just one piece, you find a bottleneck somewhere else. E.g., my daughter's old hand-me-down had a P-II 400MHz, with a 133 MHz bus, a 33 MB/sec disk controller. My P-III has a 66 MB/sec disk controller. Her new P-4 has a 533 MHz bus, and a 100 MB/sec controller. In my experience, unless it's really cheap, it's not usually worth upgrading just one piece. Often, companies like Compaq sell computers with high-speed CPUs and too little RAM, too slow a hard disk. Consumers think they've got a "fast" machine, and don't realize how poor the performance is compared to a machine with "balanced" parts.
