Robert, It has been a long time since I did a clean install on my OS X,
so my dock is not in the " New Install" format.

As I recall, the default icon next to the trash on the dock is the @ on
a slinky -- which takes you to the Apple OS X Site.

You can rearrange items on the dock: click-hold and drag to elswhere on
the dock.

You can delete items on the dock: click-hold and drag off the dock.

Add items to the dock: click-hold and drag a folder, program, document
icon to the dock.

Again, there is no icon for the desktop.

But, if you want to hide everything and display only the desktop then
command-option (Open-Apple key + Option key) click on the Finder icon
(leftmost icon in the dock).

HTH

Dick
