Erika,

Its unfortunate about Maddy, but as you said she'll probably be more
adoptable now. Good luck with Clyde/Woody. I suspect that one of our
ferrets, Augustus was abused. He had many similar defensive
behaviors. As you said it took time and TLC, but now he's a very
good little animal.

>The Bad News.
>We took Maddy back on Thursday (which broke our hearts as she really was
>a great dog) but as the kennel said, since she's now had some home
>experience and proved to be quite good except for the cat, it will be
>much easier for someone to give her a home. With no cats. So they
>appreciated the time we did spend with her.

>The Good News
>We took a dog named Clyde for a walk afterwards. He is very shy and
>timid and was likely beat during his short life, as he has a tendency to
>cower if you move too fast over him. :(
>
>But we decided to give him a go anyway, as TLC is something we have
>plenty of, and with me being home all day, plenty of time to bond with
>him.
>
>So we got right to it when we got him home today, let him sniff around
>the house first. Negotiate the stairs ... Then introduced him to Snoopy
>in the bedroom. I had Snoopy on the corner of the bed, and Phil brought
>Clyde in. Total disinterest. Snoopy of course growled. ;)
>
>So Phil walked him down the hallway and brought him in again, right up
>to the edge of the bed, Clyde looked at the cat, then looked away.
>Didn't care. I moved Snoopy around, let him growl so Clyde could see
>that it was a furry live animal, but he still didn't care one hoot.
>
>So Phil walked him out and I put Snoopy on the floor, then Phil walked
>Clyde back in, he looked at the cat, then looked up at Phil as if to
>say, "What? What do you want me to do?" He then just stood there and
>panted.
>
>So I held the cat up (yeah, getting brave holding a potential clawing,
>biting, spitting cat but I wanted a reaction) and held Snoopy near the
>dogs face, Snoopy hissed and took a couple of mighty swipes at Clyde. He
>stopped panting, put a sad look on his face, and cowered behind Phil.
>
>Hmmm.
>
>So, one more time, Phil led him down the hall, then brought him back.
>This time he didn't even want to be near the cat, so I let Snoopy loose
>to run by his legs, and he perked up a bit at that, but only to just see
>what was going on. He didn't want to chase him, and didn't even so much
>as sniff or look for him afterwards.
>
>So. We might have a winner. Now he's gets the week's test. He will still
>stay muzzled when loose around the house and not blocked off from
>Snoopy. He still needs to settle, as he is very nervous, and Snoopy has
>to learn to come out of hiding. The potential for him to change his mind
>about the cat is there, as the kennels and experts warn, but we'll see.
>
>Should all go well, he is being renamed Woody, short for Woodstock. ;)
>
>He's a very handsome, dark brindle boy, and as soon as I can, I'll get
>some pics up. Of both him and Maddy.
>

>Cheers,
