We tried something like that on the baseboards for our guide dog pup (yellow lab) .. he just licked it off ... Tabasco sauce on the hand worked quite well ... ;)

You can get it in the training aids section of most pet stores. It comes in a spray or a cream. All animals hate the smell and taste of the stuff.
