Slashdot is an incredibly useful source of information on things you can do
for hobbies, not just nerd stuff.

1) Build your kids a treehouse - there was recently an article dealing with
the challenges involved in putting up a treehouse in the shape of a 20 foot
battlemech. Complete with pictures, diagrams, lessons learned, materials,
etc. Could keep someone busy for a full year.

2) Take up an interest in the politics surrounding computing - Rarely a day
goes by without an article being posted on legislation before congress that
would impose policewear on every PC, punish hacking with greater penalties
than murder, etc. Start a letter writing campaign, put up a web site and
track all these issues, I'm betting this could be a second full time job if
you put your heart into it.

3) Build robots - I know it sounds crazy, or perhaps too technical, but
there are a lot of household-servant type robot kits available these days.
Check out Slashdot for reviews and see if they tickle your fancy. Robots are
cool, and some have been retrofitted with all kinds of useful things (like
security cameras). Could be a complete waste of time, but I can't imagine
anything more engaging than building the next C-3PO in your garage.

These are just a few ideas, read the site daily and I am sure you could find
something to keep you busy.
