Although not (well, currently) catholic (or even a believer) I do have to mention that this is more of a media invention than anything else. There is a crisis in the church that's coming to light now: a crisis that centers on the fact that for decades such abuses were shunted aside and hidden. As they all coming to light now the total number seems much higher than reality would dictate. Also the news will now report every instance repeatedly and sensationalisticly making the actual problem seem larger than it is (as "the summer of the shark" and others). I've yet to see any information that indicates that priests are more likely to be molesters than any other group. I do find the actions of the church leaders reprehensible in hiding the abuse and feel that the honest victims should be heard. But I also feel that the vast, vast majority of non-abusive priests are being treated poorly due to this. Guilty until proven innocent comes to mind. As does "The Crucible" for some reason...
