I remember reading this as well - but the culprits were weasels, not
ferrets (admittedly some would say minor difference).  There was a
section of the book "The Incredible Journey" that detailed this...

The dogs scare a weasel from a porcupine carcas and really enjoy it.
Later they try to attack a porcupine themselves and don't do a very good
job of it.
