I think it's a great idea.  I mean most other nations have some sort of obligatory 
service, and if a person is a true pacifist you can always have them work in medical 
facilities and stuff.

Truth be told I am very surprised that it was this man to put it forward.

I think this would reap great benefits across the board(greater personal
responsibility, discipline, etc).  I know I gained a lot as a person from my
two years(US army, not Singapore).

I don't think this is exactly what the senator is suggesting, though.  I
think he is just trying to make it more personal so those in power will bear
the same burden that the "common" mom's and dad's do.
