Lynchings were acts of vigilantism then and would be considered so today.

Are there case of "vigilante justice" in the US, past and present? Yes. Will
there be cases in the future? probably. But this wasn't vigilantism. An
angry mob didn't break this idiot out of jail and hang him/behead
him/cut-off-his-leg for his "crime." He was convicted by the officially
recognized court for that district in Nigeria and sentenced. The sentence
will be carried out; not by vigilantes, but by a doctor using no anesthesia
or painkillers, again by court order.

Now, when was the last time in the United States that (just for example
purposes) a woman was sentenced to be stoned to death in the for commiting
adultery (different story, I know, but Sharia all the same)? When was the
last time someone was sentenced to lose a hand for stealing?

Just so you know, and to clarify things a bit; I do not agree with capital
punishment (where this discussion is probably heading :-). I don't think it
works as a deterrent, nor do I think it a fiscally responsible way to deal
with prisoners convicted of crimes.
