Actually, while I liked your post and agree that N/S America obviously
include more than the United States, there is actually some controversy over
the Amerigo Vespucci origin of the name.

It's not even whether Amerigo Vespucci actually made some of the voyages for
which he is credited, which is another controversy, it's whether the name is
from him at all. Recent evidence indicates that Richard Amerike from Wales
was a patron of early explorers and is commemorated as a "reward for his
patronage by asking that any new-found lands should be named after him."

Don't worry that the link is from the UK, there are plenty more if you
Google it. I originally heard about it on NPR. Whether he is the progenitor
of the name "America" or whether it's Vespucci, the continents that contain
Canada and Venezuala and Chile and such are all indeed the Americas.
