All kinds of things. First off, what kind of internet connection are you using and are you going through a router?
Everything you mentioned as working uses a port besides 80, it is possible the port froze up and would not let any traffic through for a while. How do you troubleshoot something like that? There is no simple way, but a remote monitoring machine with NMAP installed could help you to find out. First off, have the machine poll an outside box at a regular interval and alert you to any failures. Secondly, use NMAP to examine packets coming off your problem PC. It is possible none were going through at all. Third, if you have a router, set it up to log all connection attempts and go back to the log files when something goes wrong. This will let you know where the problem is. Funny troubleshooting story, I was sitting at a client's house and we had trouble connecting to the Internet. He just installed XP Pro and was certain the connection worked, but we could not get a Web page to load. I got on the machine, looked around in XP to get a command prompt (which I never found), checked the network adapter properties, etc. Turned out the jack had fallen out of the wall. All of a sudden the small office network I set up using Windows XP Pro..just failed. You could connect to ICQ, MSN..even get email..but you could not surf at all. I repaired the connections...recreated the Host internet gateway sharing connection (Direct PC)..went on each client and did the same..nothing worked! Then while I'm sitting there puzzled as hell...the web page suddenly loads! What's changed? NOT A DAMNED THING! Was anything changed when we suddenly could not access web pages? NO! It just HAPPENED! And then it just STOPPED HAPPENING! How the hell do you troubleshoot a problem like that? What causes shit like that to happen1?
