I've already said I was willing to compensate on how much I would pay for heat/goods, if it meant having to make everyone pay the actual amount of how much their fuel really costs. That's the core of my argument.
Maybe some companies would decide that manufacturing their goods domestically makes more sense than having it shipped from the other side of the world. Sure, they would have to pay more wages, but it would cost less than having it shipped from china where the 8 year olds are forced by their families to do it for $40 a week. I know a few local factory workers would be happy about that. Enviro people would be happy about it. Who is left to not be happy about this? We don't even make our own shoes here, the last american company to mass produce shoes in the states shut down last year. Cheap gasoline makes this possible and we abuse it. We're living on a false conception that the things we consume at Target, and that liquid stuff we put in our tahoes just magically appear there out of nowhere. You might not, but I know plenty of credit-card wifes who do. And your welfare argument is lame. You wouldn't need to pay for welfare if the people receiving it were able to pay for it themselves. That's why it's called welfare. It would be a larger social burden to just let those people starve and resort to crime than it would be to just make sure they can get by for the next few months. Obviously some people abuse the system, but I think you have the wrong impression of who's doing the most abusing. I went to college for a year and my trust-fund buddy thought it would be cool to apply for food stamps since he didn't have a job. He got the food stamps and every month we would throw a rager featuring lobster and filet mignon. I feel bad about it now, but that's the type of abuse I'm talking about - it's not just urban crack dealers as I think you're envisioning. > -----Original Message----- > From: Kevin Schmidt [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 1:47 PM > To: CF-Community > Subject: SUV break? > Part of living in America pal.
