I use VNC on the mac now, but it's very VERY slow, I have to connect through
a 56k connection and  was hoping I could use apple's built in control
funtion.

Apple does have their own Remote Desktop type tool, but as you noticed it's
Mac-only. As Ben mentioned there is actual telnet, though the SSH is
preferred. There is also VNC. Here's a link I found for that:
