It was probably a hard-core safe built to resist just about any kind of
damage.

My cousin is an airline inspector, and has mentioned the presence of them
before. Sometimes in accidents, when even the black box is unrecoverable,
the safe will be intact.

Subject: safe place" on airplanes?

This morning I was watching the Today show and they were talking about the
shoe bomber. They mentioned how after they had gotten the shoes off the
bomber, they put the shoes in a "safe place." Matt Lauer made a comment
about how he wouldn't say what that safe place was. So - what's the deal? Is
there a place in an airplane that can (maybe) withstand the power of a small
bomb? Why would this be a secret?
