In the US, Jam and Preserves are pretty much equivalent. Jam includes the seeds and lumpy bits of fruit in suspension. Jelly otoh, is a Jam that has been put through a straining refinement process so that the particulates are all gone and all that is left is the color and flavor in the jellied pectin. It is still spread on bread and such, so in that respect it is different from Jell-O.
