What is very interesting is that the first one also appeared in the Chicago Tribune. So this was not a one-off complaint about US treatment of the situation, but a coordinated attempt to sway opinion. Still contains an interesting and thoughtful view ... We were still waiting to be attacked while the French had already surrendered.
