When Mom was pregnant with me, it was just about true. The last month or
so, she couldn't drive. If she put the seat back far enough to get her gut
behind the wheel, she couldn't reach the pedals.
Something similar happened to a friend of mine in HS. She was always a
petite girl, and didn't get very big. Until month 8. And then... Well,
have you ever seen them inflate a hot air balloon? The image is just about
right. We got to the point where during one class that always involved a
meeting then going off to work, we rolled in an office chair for her so we
could roll her from station to station so she wouldn't have to lever herself
up.
When she first got pregnant, no one talked about it in front of her. I
mean, it's the /very/ rural South, and you're supposed to ignore stuff like
that. I think she got tired of all the whispers, because one day, we came
into the lab and she was looking at a video with the teacher. "What are you
watching?" someone naturally asked. "My ultrasound...."
