In MA the system is actually pretty good. It USED to be that you had to
show up everyday for up to a month at a stretch. Now we're using the
"one day, one trail" system:

+) When you're notified you can reschedule your appearance for up to a
+YEAR later.

+) You can choose among several different courthouses (some are better
+equipped for the handicapped or feature more parking).

+) When you get there (too early in my opinion, at 8:30AM) you sign in
+then are allowed to wander throughout the several rooms - snack
+machines, magazines, etc. A PA system will call you if they need you.

+) If you get selected for a trail you serve that trail and then you're
+done.

+) If not selected they can keep you until 4pm, then you're done.

I've been here (in Boston) for around 11 years and I've been called
twice. The first time I was out by noon and the second time I actually
made it into the jury box but was kicked out on attorney panel
selection.

All told the system seems to be about as fair as it could possibly be, I
think.
