Maybe UML doesn't make you code faster, but it could make you code better.  Also, 
artifacts like activity diagrams and textual use cases are usable throughout the 
development process to help explain unclear processes.

With development methodologies like extreme programming, most of the artifacts are 
actually after the development process.

There are many UML artifacts that are quite usable by non-OO languages: activity 
diagrams, use cases, sequence diagrams, collaboration diagrams, deployment diagrams.
