The refineries were ordered to use MTBE. Now we're being ordered to remove it. Go figure. The idiots at EPA never think through the consequences. The ground-water pollution will be here for a long time.
I'm not a blend engineer, but the main difference between summer and winter blends is in vapor pressure - has to do with at what temperature gas can vaporize to mix with air for combustion. No, it doesn't take six months to switch formulas. But refineries switch production in spring, so they can draw down inventories of winter blend and build up summer stocks. Didn't say this was the only reason prices went up. I don't understand all of it. But I do know that our company was losing a ton of money until recently, with the high crude prices and pump prices not going up as fast.
