A notebook not many people have heard of but it actually is very good and affordable is SOTEC's 3120X
http://www.sotecglobal.com They are very popular in Japan and just starting out here in the US, but they are really good. I have one and it's thin (1.3" and 4.4 lbs) but it is a very nice laptop. I boug it at Wal-Mart for $800 and it really is a very good investment. Just thought I'd put my $0.02 in this conversation :) In addition, I also have an HP xz133 latpop and that one is also very nice :-) Pablo -----Original Message----- From: Ben Doom [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 18, 2003 6:53 PM To: CF-Community Subject: RE: Notebook Recommendations First, be aware that most Linux systems /are/ IBM compatible. What you mean is "Gimme a windows system!" Resistance is futile, you have been assimilated. (he types in Outlook on a Win2k box) If you don't mind expensive, Sony makes them about as thin and light as you could want with decent load outs. I'm partial to IBM Thinkpads (which obviously fit your last criterium :-) and Toshibas because they tend to be durable, reliable, and you can get them with trackpoints, which people either hate or love.
