Actually, cosleeping can be very safe, and actually decreases the incidence of SIDS. You just have to make sure that the baby is on his back and not in danger of being covered by bedding/pillows, etc. The nurses in the hospital actually put Soren in bed with me when I couldn't get him to sleep in the bassinet. As soon as he was next to me, he quieted right down.
The whole co-sleeping being a scary thing is a very "western" concept.
