While the political French stance is one of the more extreme it's not entirely uncommon or without cause. The people of any society are the products (perhaps victims) of the information they are given. In the US and the U.K. (and other pro-war coutries/areas) the information being given is very anti-Saddam and pro military action. However in many other parts of the world the information being seen is often slanted in Iraq's favor. Specifically Al Jereeza is the number one source of information about the war for much of the world - and their information while generally professional, has a definate anti-American slant. France, I believe, still has state run television as do the vast majority of nations in the world. The people believe (in any culture) what the powers that be tell them. Couple this with the existing anti-American feelings in France (which are there for many reasons, some valid) and you have a people willing take such information at face value. So in the end if somebody is confused and working from potentially incorrect information do you ignore them and ostracize them or do you work with them and attempt to enlighten them?
