Ah ok I was curious whether it might have originated from Sears!

Your comment about the petition brings up a question that is bothering me
these days.
Does it not seem to anyone else that hatred is very often explicitly or
implicitly condoned
in the muslim world? Where's the religion in that?

I don't think I'm being too Judaeo-Christian when I ask that, as I am a
Buddhist.
Is it just ingrained in the Arab psyche and Islam just turns a blind eye to
it
or what's the story?

I mean it's a relevant question because many have rightly raised the
question
of how well western-style democracy will fare in post-war Iraq, in what is
more or less a medieval-style
patriarchal feudal environment? I am thinking of the problems in Japan
as another example of this issue.

Granted that Iraq is a secular state, but then we have the
bizarre scenario of self-interested secular Iraqi politicians calling for a
jihad or holy war
against the U.S. coalition!

The hermetic if not anaerobic nature of the Islamic Arab world,
especially it's extreme fundamentalist side, has been worrying me ever since
they issued
a jihad against Salman Rushdie. You can be sure that none of those who
issued that order
ever read his book. People with such a terminal lack of humour scare the
shit out of me....

Ever since that time I've been expecting a whole lot more bad to come out of
that
part of the world. Anyways, I guess the question that I'm dancing around is
to what degree is Arab violence and hatred a reflection of Islamic theology
and to what extent is it
fostered by corrupt authorities - be they religious or secular or both?

Thoughts? Thanks.
