Don't forget: the French were on board just 4 months ago with UN resolution 1441. The real question is why did the French position change in the last 4 months?
If you want to actually understand why the French believe what they do (rather than just assuming they must all be evil, stupid or both) you should educate yourself on 3 key events: 1.) The US's exit from the League of Nations in the '30s, 2.) The Suez crisis in 1956 (see link below), and 3.)
