What's so ironic? We've removed two regimes who supported terrorists, and are in the messy, long-term process of creating representative governments in each country. We are supporting the Philippines in a similar battle. Saudi Arabia is starting to address some of their issues and another main stay of Middle East instability has had a major revenue stream cut off and is rightfully concerned about what may happen is a trail leads to their door.
These hardball tactics, something well understood in the Middle East, provide for an historic opportunity to negotiate a peace that may last. This peace, along with representative governments that will evolve, provide the best opportunity for raising the educational and living standards of the area, which is the ONLY route towards a lasting peace. As long as you have repressive regimes keeping their people uneducated and uninformed and there are significant differences in standards of living between them and us, there will be have to be a bad guy blamed for their problems. It will NOT be their government, it will not be themselves. It will be anyone opposite in race, color, religion. It will be us. Check the history books on this one. And their weapon of choice, because it uses cheap, abundant resources will be terrorist attacks. So, we can sit back and try to talk our way out, buy our way out or anything else you might suggest. We can whine, cry, give it more time, let more people die from violence, starvation and disease. However, please suggest something new, cause we've tried everything else and it doesn't work. Period.
