re: flakiness,
if you monitor the signal strenth via an icon in the taskbar,
you may find that you have low signal strength and/or "interference" if you are 
having "flaky" connections.

did some research, found that residential construction (sheetrock + wood studs) 
and wireless networks do not play well together.

also, 2.4GHz cordless phones are in the same frequency band as 802.11b and g.
If the base station for a cordless phone is between you and the wireless 
antenna, it interferes.  So do a lot of microwave ovens.

My solution was to add a WAP (Wireless Access Point) in the bedroom, at the 
opposite end of the house from the den, and with the "offending equipment" in 
between. Get a great signal now.
