Coincidently, I received a call from a client today, telling me that his two web sites were suddenly pointing to the wrong server.
This is a situation where I furnish the DNS service for them. I first checked the server configuration, and found that the server configuration had not changed. Then I checked the DNS servers, and looked for a corrupted entry or file. None were corrupted or changed. Next, I tested the web sites, and like your provider, his site came up just fine for me. Next I did some web tracking, and the DNS propagation to the root servers had not changed either. Then in my Sam Spade application, I entered the name servers that RoadRunner uses (The client is on RoadRunner) and discovered their name servers were not updating every 24 hours as they are supposed to, consequently were not accurately resolving the domain name. I then called RoadRunner Tech support (Thank goodness I have a friend there, because I am not a customer of theirs) and got him to check their name server situation. He agreed that their primary DNS server, the one that updates all the others was down. They did not know this because all the other name servers were providing redundancy. He then re-booted the primary name server, and within about an hour, it updated, and passed that on to the other servers that they use. Once that was accomplished, the client's web sites could be accessed again by the client. According to the Web Stats program, his sites were receiving hits from everyone else all along. I go into all this detail, partly to explain the process one has to go through to make sure web site is online and accessible. In this case, it was no fault of my systems or network, however, I felt the need to take ownership of the complaint, and seek a resolution that would be satisfactory to the client. It was a three and a half hour effort to get the job done. I cannot say if your provider is going through all those steps or not, but if the DNS is pointing to the correct IP number, and your account is the same that you have had bookmarked, then the problem is their server configuration, and possibly in the default document section, if it is a Windows server, running IIS. All of those steps need to be double-checked by the provider. I wish you luck. ====================================== Stop spam on your domain, use our gateway!
