Believe it or not, Thurmond was a great friend of the Internet and I will
miss his enlightened approach of 'hearing from all parties with a direct
interest' in decisions that affect us all (unlike some other officials I
will fail to mention).

Thurmond was single handedly responsible for removing some of the darker,
more disturbing passages of the Child Online Protection act, which would
have given individuals the right to sue individual ISPs when someone
accessed an objectionable Web site through their service. In other words,
you log onto AOL, you look at some naughty, you would have the right to sue
AOL. He was a voice of reason on this one.

In his last year of the senate, he blocked legislation which would have
forced online radio stations to pay high taxes to broadcast music radio
stations broadcast for free. He did this on the basis that this legislation
would put members of his constituency out of work, and decided that this
legislation would need much more review before it could be seriously
considered. The music labels quitely and quickly settled with Internet
radio, and this was Thurmond's doing.
